Spectro Powder Products
Powder coatings are highly regarded as environmentally-friendly coatings, as they do not contain organic solvents or water. Spectro’s product lineup includes various types of resins for each curing system.
Acrylic Powder Coatings
Acrylic resins have been used in powder coatings since the 1970’s, and have been steadily growing in popularity.
Acrylic resins have three distinct uses in powder coating applications:
- As Primary Film-Forming: Acrylic powders display excellent film appearance and clarity in demanding clear coat applications such as automotive full-body clear coats, automotive wheels and parts and brass hardware.
- As Crosslinkers: Acrylics are used as crosslinkers for polyester resins in matte powders where they act as gloss-control agents. These acrylic-cured matte powder coatings work well in applications such as automotive trims, architectural metals, and high-quality patio furniture.
- As Additives: Acrylic resins are used as additives to promote improved flow and leveling as well as enhanced stain and chemical resistance in polyester hybrid, polyester TGIC, and polyurethane powder coatings. Unlike standard flow aids, these reactive materials provide improvements in film properties by crosslinking into the powder coating polymer backbone. These materials also help improve compatibility between batches of two individual powder coatings by improving each powders’ crater resistance.
Anti-microbial Powder Coatings
Antimicrobial powder coatings are used to provide supplemental protection against the growth of microorganisms in a wide range of applications. Antimicrobial coatings possess high temperature stability and excellent color retention. They are also durable and capable of providing maximum protection over an extended period of time.
Typical applications for antimicrobial coatings include:
- Food processing equipment
- Medical equipment
- Fitness equipment
- Pharmaceutical labs
- Hospital furniture
- Hand rails
- Storage containers and tanks
- Utensils, kitchen equipment
- Restroom accessories
- Appliances
- Shower enclosures
- Water coolers and ice-making equipment
Bonded Metallic Powder Coatings
Bonded powder coating products are powder bases that are thermally bonded with a metallic pigment. The bonded metal-powder particles allow for consistent application properties, the development of uniform appearance of the cured paint film, and the reclaim-ability of over-spray powder.
Typical applications for bonded metallic coatings include:
- Fitness Equipment
- Outdoor and Indoor Furniture
- Wheels
- Lighting Fixtures
- Display Racks
- Shelving Units
- Hospital Furniture
- Car Components
Epoxy Powder Coatings
Epoxy powder coatings are created for applications requiring great chemical and corrosion resistance and a high quality aesthetic, but where exterior durability is not important.
Typical applications for epoxy coatings include:
- Material handling components
- Automotive underbody parts
- Metal cabinets
- Sports and recreation equipment
- Furniture
- Hand and Power tools
- Brass plumbing and hardware fixtures
- Tool boxes
- Wire goods
Hybrid Powder Coatings
Hybrid powders were conceived by combining two base resins into a thermoset curing scheme.
The most common hybrid powder coating consists of a blend of carboxyl polyester and epoxy resins. They are formed by blending these two polymer types in different ratios depending on the end-use requirements.
Acrylic hybrid powders are a blend of either polyester and acrylic or epoxy and acrylic. These formulations are primarily used in very low gloss (<10 @ 600) but can also be formulated to provide cross functional properties to polyesters or epoxies.
The market for hybrids is rather broad but is limited to indoor applications in most cases. Some of the biggest consumers of hybrid products are the metal office furniture, shelving, appliance and automotive industries. Each has its own specific requirements and specifications.
Anti-graffiti Powder Coatings
An unfortunate symptom of modern society is that many items placed in an urban environment are often mistreated.
This includes:
- Graffiti
- Staining
- Attack by cleansers and other chemicals
- Aggressive atmospheres
City councils, train companies and building owners want a coating that remains presentable for long periods. Spectro powder coatings can be formulated with anti-graffiti capability. Available in polyurethane, epoxy and modified polyester TGIC technology, these coatings not only have first class anti-graffiti properties, but they benefit from good chemical and stain resistance, great durability and of course they look great.
Typical applications for these coatings include:
- Public transport
- Public transit areas
- Signage
- Playground and recreational equipment
- Lockers and mailboxes
- Doors
- Gaming equipment
- Restroom structures
- Grills
- Roller doors
